Bull Calves

These bulls are raised with their future in mind.  Truly developed under range conditions in the short grass country of Northern Montana.  You won't see any animals here standing knee deep in irrigated hay fields or belly up to a feed bunk and my idea of a high roughage ration doesn't include grain silage.  The bulls here are born out on roughly half-section pastures in a 3 year deferred-rest-rotation and don't see anything but their mother's milk and desert prairie grass until mid October.  They come home and spend 10 days in a dry lot with self choice long stem grass hay (brome) while weaning and then get kicked into a 40 acre development pasture of crested wheat grass/rye grass with self choice brome hay and 2.5 lbs/hd/day of either whole oats or a 75/25 rolled corn/canola meal ration with no additives of any kind.  Starting early April the bulls go back out on native grass pastures on a rest-rotation and come home again December 1st to go on another 40 acre development pasture with free choice long stem brome hay and 5 lbs/hd/day of either of the two same rations as calves.

The bulls on offer are of the top 1/3 of the crop born to mothers that under-go one of the most rigid development programs there is.  I prefer to offer them as coming 2's but will and do offer them as yearlings into later breeding programs.  Every female born on this place is run just like the bull calves through their 10 day weaning program but then go back out on Native grass and solid stem wheat stubble for the winter.  They are supplemented with salt and trace minerals and an all natural protein supplement and lick snow all but the days I go to check supplements that can range from 3 or 4 days to a 10 day stretch.  Starting in April they come back on tame cool season pastures.  By breeding time June 20th it is obvious which females have made the  grade.  As cows, they will spend their winters just like they did as weaned calves but are rolled out alfalfa/ grass hay at a rate of 12lbs/hd/every other day on the worst of winter days.  If the females cannot thrive in this setting they never raise a bull (that has nuts to prove it anyhow).  The motto here has and always will be "Quality before Quantity".  All bulls are sold with our guarantee in place since 1988 - feel free to call and inquire!  Performance and ultrasound data available upon request.
